Kerala School’s RSS Song Performance at Vande Bharat Launch Sparks Controversy: Principal Denies Railways Involvement

A recent video from the Southern Railway showed students singing the RSS ‘Gana Geetham’ during the launch of the Ernakulam-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express. This sparked a heated debate in Kerala.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan accused the Sangh Parivar of using the Railways to promote a communal agenda. Meanwhile, opposition leader V.D. Satheesan criticized the involvement of students in the event. The BJP responded, arguing that the CM was undermining the children’s right to express themselves.

Twenty students and two teachers from Saraswathi Vidyanikethan Public School participated in the train’s inaugural run, which Prime Minister Modi flagged off virtually. The school’s principal, K.P. Dinto, clarified that the students were approached by a TV crew and sang Gana Geetham when asked for a Malayalam song, emphasizing that the event was meant to celebrate unity.

Despite his comments, controversy persisted. Vijayan labeled the situation as inappropriate, stating, “Including the anthem of an organization known for spreading religious hatred in a government event violates constitutional principles.” Satheesan echoed his sentiments, arguing that such actions promote divisiveness.

In defense, BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar questioned the criticism, highlighting that students were simply expressing their love for their country by singing patriotic songs.

This incident reflects broader trends in Indian politics, where national events often become platforms for political posturing. The tensions raised questions about freedom of expression and the role of educational institutions in such affairs.

In the past, similar instances have occurred, with events like school functions or public celebrations becoming battlegrounds for political narratives. The ongoing debate also mirrors the complexities of Indian society, where cultural expressions can become contentious.

As public sentiment shifts, many on social media grapple with the ramifications of politicizing youth events. Discussions around children’s rights and political influence continue to surface, highlighting a critical point: how do we balance national pride with respect for diversity in expression?
