Kerala’s Left Government to Introduce ‘Governor’s Powers’ Curriculum Amid Portrait Controversy with Governor

The clash between Kerala’s Governor and its Communist-led government is heating up. Recently, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar walked out of a function at Raj Bhavan after Education Minister V. Sivankutty objected to a portrait of Bharat Mata displayed with a saffron flag.

Sivankutty’s protest marks a significant moment in state politics. He announced that new social science textbooks for Class 10 would include lessons about the constitutional powers of the Governor. “Teaching constitutional values is essential,” he stated. This move reflects an ongoing tension between the Left front government and Raj Bhavan over political symbolism at official events.

This isn’t the first time these parties have disagreed. Just a few months ago, another ceremony saw similar disputes about Bharat Mata’s representation. Sivankutty strongly criticized the Governor’s decision to include political imagery in official functions. He remarked, “Raj Bhavan is not the Governor’s family property.”

The Governor, on the other hand, defended the use of Bharat Mata, saying it inspires patriotism among youth. He emphasized that the portrait symbolically represents national pride.

According to a recent survey from the Centre for Political Studies, around 70% of respondents in Kerala believe that educational curricula should stay clear of political influences. This statistic highlights the delicate balance that educators and politicians must navigate when discussing national identity in schools.

Understanding the historical context is vital too. Just a few decades ago, expressions of nationalism varied widely. Today’s focus on specific symbols—like Bharat Mata—reflects a shift in political dynamics in India. Discussions around such imagery often ignite passions, showing just how interconnected education and politics can be.

As these tensions continue, it’s clear that the debate around national identity in Kerala is far from over. The state’s approach to education and representation will likely shape its political landscape in the years to come.
