Kerala’s Left Government to Introduce ‘Powers of the Governor’ Curriculum Amid Controversy Over ‘Bharat Mata’ Portrait

The ongoing clash between Kerala’s Governor and the state’s elected government, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), is heating up. Recently, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar walked out of a ceremony at Raj Bhavan after harsh criticism regarding the portrayal of Bharat Mata with a saffron flag. In response, Kerala’s Education Minister V. Sivankutty announced plans to include the Governor’s powers in school curricula this year.

During the award ceremony for the Kerala State Bharat Scouts and Guides, the atmosphere shifted when Sivankutty objected to the portrait and then walked out, declaring Raj Bhavan should not serve as a platform for specific political ideologies.

Sivankutty emphasized that the powers of the Governor should be taught in schools. He pointed out that the Supreme Court has defined these powers clearly, stressing that students should understand constitutional values. “The Governor should reconsider his message, which implies that students should idolize Bharat Mata,” he stated.

Arlekar defended his stance, insisting that Bharat Mata represents patriotism and national identity, essential for nurturing national values among youth. His remarks suggest a deep-rooted belief in the symbolism of Bharat Mata in fostering unity.
