Kettering Health Terminates Medicare Contracts with Major Insurers: What It Means for Patients and Providers

Kettering Health Network recently made a significant announcement: it will end contracts with two major Medicare Advantage insurers, Humana and Devoted Health. This decision impacts many patients who rely on these plans for coverage.

The health network reported difficulties with these insurers, including numerous claim denials and payment issues. These problems have created a heavy operational burden. Kettering Health tried to negotiate a new agreement starting in May, but they couldn’t reach a satisfactory deal. As a result, beginning January 1, 2026, Kettering Health will no longer accept plans from Humana or Devoted Health.

If you’re a patient with insurance from these providers, you still have options. Kettering Health is encouraging you to consider switching your coverage during the Annual Coordinated Election Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 to December 7, 2025. You can opt for new plans that will keep you in-network at Kettering. Additionally, there’s another opportunity to change plans during the Midcare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31, 2026.

Kettering Health is proactively reaching out to those affected, sending out letters to ensure they are informed of the change and the steps they can take. This kind of move reflects a broader trend in healthcare where providers assess their relationships with insurance companies based on operational viability and patient care quality.

In fact, a recent report from the Kaiser Family Foundation notes that many Medicare Advantage markets are dominated by just one or two insurers, making such changes impactful for a significant portion of patients. Affected patients are encouraged to stay informed and explore their options.

Keeping up with changes in healthcare coverage is crucial, especially as the landscape continues to evolve. Make sure to check your mail and stay engaged with updates from Kettering Health.
