Kevin Costner Faces Lawsuit from Stunt Performer Over Controversial Unscripted Scene in ‘Horizon 2’

A stunt performer, Devyn LaBella, has filed a lawsuit against Kevin Costner and the production companies of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2. She claims that during filming, a scene depicting sexual violence was recorded without her consent and without an intimacy coordinator present.

LaBella alleges sexual discrimination, harassment, and that the filming created a hostile work environment. She feels she faced retaliation after voicing her concerns, noting she was not called back for further work on the project.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, LaBella expressed deep disappointment, stating, “On that day, I was left exposed and betrayed by a system that promised safety.” This highlights a common issue in the entertainment industry, where performers often feel vulnerable.

Costner’s lawyer, Marty Singer, dismissed the claims as baseless, arguing LaBella’s actions contradict her allegations. He stated that Costner prioritizes the comfort and safety of everyone on set. Singer even referenced a text message from LaBella thanking the stunt coordinator for her time on set.

According to the lawsuit, LaBella was cast as a stunt double for actress Ella Hunt. Although Hunt had arranged for an intimacy coordinator for intimate scenes, LaBella claims rules were overlooked during a new, unplanned scene on May 2, 2023. Hunt reportedly declined to perform this scene, leaving LaBella in an uncomfortable position.

The lawsuit contains disturbing details about the scene, claiming LaBella was subjected to unwanted physical contact from another actor. LaBella asserts that there was no rehearsal for this part and that the crew could see everything happening, escalating her distress.

Singer countered that LaBella was informed about the scene and agreed to proceed after a rehearsal. He claimed she showed no signs of discomfort during subsequent interactions.

LaBella describes feeling “terrified” after the incident and stated that her career faced a significant setback, impacting her confidence. She seeks not just compensation but a broader conversation about the industry’s need for better safety measures regarding intimacy on set.

This lawsuit is part of a growing conversation in Hollywood about consent and safety. Recent surveys indicate that a significant number of industry professionals advocate for stricter guidelines around intimate scenes.
