The Houston Rockets have made a big move by signing Kevin Durant to a two-year, $90 million extension. This deal secures his place with the team until the end of the 2027-28 season, which could mean Durant finishes his illustrious career in Houston at 39.
Despite being $30 million short of the maximum he could have signed for, Durant’s decision gives the Rockets flexibility. This is crucial as they aim to build around their core players and enhance their roster. Durant shared his excitement earlier this month, saying, “I see myself signing an extension.”
He highlighted the Rockets’ growth, mentioning how quickly the team turned around under coach Ime Udoka. The Rockets traded for Durant earlier this year, sending prospects and a draft pick to the Phoenix Suns after a disappointing season, where the Suns only managed 36 wins.
Even amidst his team’s struggles, Durant had an impressive performance last season. He averaged 26.6 points, six rebounds, and 4.2 assists while maintaining high shooting efficiency at 52.7% from the field and 43% from three-point range. This season, he’s aiming to pass Wilt Chamberlain’s 31,419 points to become one of the top scorers in NBA history.
The Rockets, fresh off a 52-win season, are pinning their hopes on Durant to provide stability and leadership. Coach Udoka noted, “His consistent scoring and ability to close games will greatly improve our play.”
With Fred VanVleet sidelined for the season due to a torn ACL, Durant might have to shoulder even more responsibility. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to adapt, emphasizing the importance of smart play and collaboration on the court.
Taking a less lucrative deal might seem odd for a player of Durant’s caliber, but at 37 years old, his focus is clearly on winning. By leaving some money on the table, he allows the Rockets more room to maneuver financially, which is vital as they look forward to extending contracts for Alperen Şengün and other young stars.
