Kevin Spacey has settled with three men who accused him of sexual assault, according to BBC News. This agreement helps him avoid a civil trial scheduled for October in London.
The allegations date back to incidents between 2000 and 2013. In November, a court determined that Spacey would face a new trial, although the specifics of the settlement remain private.
Spacey has repeatedly denied all these claims. Earlier this year, he was found not guilty of similar charges from four men during a criminal trial in the UK. Following that, two of those men took their cases to London’s High Court.
One plaintiff had previously filed a lawsuit in 2022, but his case was paused during the criminal proceedings. He claims he suffered psychological harm and financial loss after an alleged assault in August 2008. Another accuser says he faced 12 assaults between 2000 and 2005.
The third accuser, Ruari Cannon, has publicly shared his name. He says Spacey groped him at a party in 2013, when Spacey was artistic director at the Old Vic theatre. Cannon explained his experience in the 2024 docuseries “Spacey Unmasked.” Spacey responded, stating that he has always been cleared when given the chance to defend himself.
In addition to these cases, Spacey faced a civil lawsuit in New York in 2022 from actor Anthony Rapp but the jury ruled in Spacey’s favor.
Experts highlight that settlements like this are common in such cases, often avoiding the emotional toll of a trial. A recent study found that about 70% of sexual assault cases result in out-of-court settlements. While this may offer resolution for some, critics argue that it allows perpetrators to avoid accountability.
