In a recent meeting at the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi, Shina Ansari, head of Iran’s Department of Environment, spoke with Inger Andersen, the UN’s Environment Programme Executive Director. They addressed serious environmental challenges facing Iran, including sand and dust storms, drought, climate change impacts, and wetland drying.
Ansari pointed out that construction of dams in Afghanistan has worsened these issues, particularly affecting the Hamoun wetlands and the local communities dependent on them. She urged UNEP’s support to tackle these problems and emphasized the need for access to environmentally friendly technologies, which have been hindered by sanctions against Iran.
Andersen acknowledged the impact of these sanctions but praised Iran’s role in environmental initiatives, especially in addressing sand and dust storms. She mentioned that the UNEP’s focus remains purely on environmental and humanitarian matters, urging for improved cooperation to overcome obstacles.
In discussions with Oman’s Environment Minister, Abdullah Bin Ali Al-Amri, Ansari noted Iran’s important collaborative role in UNEA-7. Al-Amri emphasized the need for a global consensus on statements for this session, highlighting Iran’s contributions.
Ansari also met with Kenya’s Environment Minister, Deborah Mlongo Barasa. They discussed cooperation on protected areas and endangered species, with plans for an environmental agreement soon to be finalized.
The UNEA, established in 2012, is a vital forum for global environmental decision-making. Since its inception, it has produced over 100 resolutions addressing significant issues like air pollution and climate change. This year’s theme, “Advancing Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet,” calls for effective responses to ensure a healthier planet for future generations.
A recent survey by the UN revealed that 70% of people globally are concerned about climate change, signaling widespread support for environmental initiatives. As countries collaborate at events like UNEA-7, the focus on shared challenges—like water scarcity and pollution—becomes essential for building a sustainable future.
