There was a time when the Le Mans test day was crucial. Teams used it to measure their speed and prepare for the race. Nowadays, it feels more like a warm-up. Teams have two free practice sessions a week before the race to fine-tune their cars.
Since 2021, the Hypercar class has implemented a Balance of Performance (BoP) system. This has made teams cautious. They often hide their real potential to avoid adjustments that could affect their race strategy. As a result, understanding test day times requires more than just looking at the numbers.
Toyota Gazoo Racing’s technical chief, David Floury, noted how tricky the day was. “It was complicated to get proper work done because of many interruptions,” he said. The test day experienced disruptions due to a safety car and red flags from off-track spins by drivers like Luca Ghiotto and Giorgio Roda.
Interestingly, lap times have improved. The circuit has seen resurfacing, and all cars have new engine power for this year. Brendon Hartley set a new fastest time with a lap of 3m26.246s in the #8 GR010 Hybrid Toyota, breaking previous records. Despite this, last year’s fastest qualifying time remains quicker.
When analyzing performance, the #83 Ferrari 499P had the best average lap time at 3m27.570s, closely followed by Alpine, BMW, and others who showed strong performances.
Floury mentioned how being the fastest doesn’t say much right now. Ferrari seems to be in good shape, with a tightly matched group behind them. Aston Martin and Peugeot are lagging, with Peugeot struggling under the current BoP.
Porsche’s LMDH racing chief, Urs Kuratle, shared that they had a productive day with all three cars. The team learned a lot, which he believes is more valuable than just fast lap times. Meanwhile, Cadillac’s Alex Lynn highlighted the competitiveness, noting that many teams are in strong form, making for an exciting upcoming race.
BMW also showed promise, even with minor setbacks like an oil leak. Alpine’s Mick Schumacher impressed with a competitive time, hinting that they are on the right track.
In the LMP2 class, ex-F1 driver Pietro Fittipaldi led the standings, while Jose Maria Lopez topped in LMGT3. With just one practice session leading into the crucial Hyperpole qualifying, the stage is set for an intense competition ahead. Weather conditions may play a role, too, with temperatures expected to rise and storms possible.
As the action heats up, fans are eager to see how the teams stack up on race day. The anticipation is palpable, making this year’s race even more thrilling.
