LOS ANGELES — Khalil Mack, a star defensive player, just signed a one-year contract to stay with the Los Angeles Chargers. The team announced this deal Saturday, confirming it’s fully guaranteed at $18 million.
Mack, who was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2016, had a bit of a rough season in 2025. He recorded only 5.5 sacks, partly because an elbow injury kept him out for four games. Still, when he was on the field, he made a big impact on defense. During the weeks he missed, the Chargers struggled, allowing 579 rushing yards, one of the worst in the league. However, once Mack returned in Week 7, the team’s defense improved significantly, allowing just 1,046 rushing yards until Week 18.
With Mack and defensive tackle Teair Tart back in the fold, the Chargers are set to keep one of the top defenses in the NFL. The team still needs to address the statuses of outside linebacker Odafe Oweh and left guard Zion Johnson, both of whom are free agents.
Despite his individual accolades, Mack has yet to win a playoff game. He currently holds an unfortunate record of 0-6 in the postseason, after the Chargers lost to the New England Patriots in the wild-card round last season. At his end-of-season press conference, Mack expressed his desire to win a championship.
He was drafted fifth overall in 2014 by the Oakland Raiders, spending his first four seasons there before being traded to the Chicago Bears in 2018. In 2022, he joined the Chargers. His impressive tally of 113 career sacks ranks him seventh among active players.
Expert Perspective
Former NFL linebacker and current coach, Mike Singletary, emphasizes that Mack’s experience and leadership are crucial for the Chargers. “He’s not just a player; he’s a game-changer,” he said. Singletary believes that a strong defense can be the backbone of a Super Bowl-winning team, and Mack could be integral in that quest.
