Kickoff 2023: Discover How Food Lion is Tackling Hunger One Meal at a Time!

Food Lion Feeds Scores Big Against Hunger

As college basketball kicks off, Food Lion Feeds is stepping up to tackle hunger with its annual Score to Give More program. This initiative brings together 55 college basketball teams, including 16 women’s teams, to make a real difference in communities across 10 states.

For every free throw made this season, Food Lion Feeds will provide 100 meals to local campus food pantries or Feeding America partner food banks. Each team can contribute up to 30,000 meals. Since its launch in 2019, the program has already donated over 6.5 million meals.

Kevin Durkee, Manager of Food Lion Feeds, emphasizes the importance of this program: “Every free throw matters, not just on the scoreboard, but for our communities. Score to Give More turns clutch moments into meaningful support for neighbors facing hunger.”

Alongside the Score to Give More program, Food Lion Feeds also runs the Sack to Give Back campaign. For every quarterback sack made by participating university teams, another 1,000 meals are donated, again up to 30,000 meals per school.

The impact of Food Lion’s efforts is significant. Since 2014, they have distributed over 1.5 billion meals, with a goal of reaching 3 billion by 2032. This work highlights a growing awareness of food insecurity, especially on college campuses, where many students struggle to find reliable meals.

Recent surveys show that nearly 30% of college students face food insecurity at some point during their academic journey. Programs like Score to Give More not only help combat this issue but also foster community spirit through sports.

More than just a charitable effort, these initiatives reflect a changing landscape in how communities can come together. Engaging students and fans in the fight against hunger adds a layer of excitement to the games, showing that every point earned on the court serves a purpose beyond just victory.
