Friday marks the start of the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. It’s an exciting time for hockey fans as young talent takes the ice.

Sweden vs. Slovakia (1 p.m. ET) – Sweden kicks off the tournament at Grand Casino Arena, and they might be the team to beat in Group A. They feature standout forwards like Anton Frondell (Chicago Blackhawks) and Ivar Stenberg, both likely top picks in their upcoming NHL Drafts. Frondell, the third overall selection in the 2025 Draft, has netted 10 goals in 25 games for Djurgarden. Stenberg currently leads Frolunda with 24 points (six goals and 18 assists) in the same number of games.
Sweden is bringing back just three players from their fourth-place finish in the 2025 Championship, including forward Victor Eklund, who scored six points in seven games. A line featuring Eklund, Frondell, and center Eric Nilson (Anaheim Ducks) could create significant challenges for their opponents. On the other hand, Slovakia might struggle offensively but is solid defensively. They have talented goalies Alan Lendak and Michal Pradel, who have both excelled in the United States Hockey League this season. Lendak has a .915 save percentage, while Pradel has recorded three shutouts and could be pivotal for Slovakia’s hopes in this match.
Denmark vs. Finland (3:30 p.m. ET) – Denmark returns to the top level of the World Juniors for the first time since 2019, but they face a tough opener against Finland at 3M Arena. Finland is known for its gritty play and features two top prospects for the 2026 draft: forward Oliver Suvanto and defenseman Juho Piiparinen. Suvanto, at 6’3″ and 207 pounds, has already secured seven points in 30 games as a teenager with Tappara. Piiparinen also makes his mark with three assists and solid ice time in the same league.
Finland boasts 11 returning players from last year’s silver medal-winning team, including Petteri Rimpinen, who was named best goalie of the tournament. He had an impressive record with a 2.34 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage.
