Alfred University’s Opening Convocation Welcomes New Students
ALFRED, NY – Alfred University kicked off its 190th academic year with a warm welcome for over 450 new students at the Galanis Family Arena. Classes for the 2025-26 year begin on Monday, August 25.
Keynote speaker Patricia Nilsen, an Alfred alumna and the first woman to lead New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E), shared insights from her impressive journey. Nilsen graduated in 1988 with degrees in English and Fine Arts. She later earned two master’s degrees and has been a crucial leader in the energy sector since 1992.
Nilsen highlighted how her diverse educational background played a role in her career. She advised students to be open to new experiences and step out of their comfort zones. “Explore different groups, try new hobbies. This will enrich your life,” she said. This advice stems from her own career filled with varied roles, including emergency preparedness and customer service.
Vocational mentorship and inclusivity are central to Alfred University’s mission. Nilsen emphasized the importance of connecting with mentors during students’ time at the university. “This is the time to find your mentors,” she suggested. Such relationships can significantly impact personal and professional growth.
Thomas Orrange, dean of Student Experience, also addressed the incoming students. He encouraged them to seek support and attend upcoming events, such as the university’s Mentorship Day on October 3.
Senior Artem Kolisnychenko, Student Senate president, reflected on his own experience. He reminded students to embrace opportunities and cultivate lasting memories. “College is a time to take risks and try new things,” he noted.
Mark Zupan, the university president, expressed pride in Alfred’s long history of inclusivity. He pointed out that Alfred was one of the first U.S. institutions to open its doors to women and various racial groups. “You belong here, and you matter,” he said, encouraging students to take advantage of the diverse academic and extracurricular offerings.
With so many pathways available, students are encouraged to build connections that can guide them through their academic journey. Forming these relationships will not only enhance their educational experience but also pave the way for a fulfilling future.
The excitement in the air was palpable as new students embarked on this transformative chapter of their lives. Nilsen captured that energy perfectly: “You’re here to alter the course of your life. The ripples of that will change the world for the better.”
This Opening Convocation marks the start of an exciting journey for Alfred University’s newest students, filled with potential and possibilities.
