The American Athletic Conference recently celebrated standout performances in women’s basketball from February 16 to 22. Tulane’s Shiloh Kimpson was recognized as the American Freshman of the Week, while Amira Mabry received an honorable mention.
This week marked Kimpson’s second time earning the freshman title, making her one of Tulane’s multiple honorees this season. Her teammate, Mecailin Marshall, has claimed the award three times. Notably, Tulane is the only team in the conference with more than one freshman of the week winner this season, showcasing their growing talent.
Kimpson, from Little Elm, Texas, had an impressive week, averaging 7.0 points and leading the conference with 17 assists over two games. In her first victory against Memphis, she recorded a career-high of seven assists. Just two days later, she started for the first time, scoring 12 points and adding 10 assists for a double-double. She nearly achieved a triple-double, pulling down six rebounds, marking new personal bests in every category. In both games against Memphis, Kimpson contributed significantly, assisting or scoring on 40.2% of the team’s total points.
Mabry, hailing from Converse, Texas, led her team in scoring with an average of 12.0 points per game this week. She shot 50% from the field, hitting 10 of 20 attempts, and added 10 rebounds, a block, and three steals. In the road game against Memphis, she scored 13 points and grabbed five boards, then followed up with 11 points and five more rebounds at home.
The Green Wave is set for more challenges as they head to face Tulsa and will return home for a senior day match against Wichita State.
For Tulane basketball fans, the season is vibrant, with players like Kimpson and Mabry leading the way. Their performances not only highlight individual talent but also the strength of the team as they compete in the conference. With Tulane’s commitment to fostering young talent, it will be exciting to see how these players evolve as the season progresses.
