Kmart’s newly updated app has stirred up quite a bit of frustration among shoppers. The company touted the app as a convenient tool, promising to make shopping simple and efficient. However, many users are finding the opposite to be true.
People have taken to social media to express their concerns. One user lamented, “Why does the app automatically show Marketplace and Target products? Is there a way to change this?” Another shared their disappointment, stating, “I wish the app would remember my settings. It doesn’t.”
The major issue seems to be that the app includes a lot of Marketplace items, which are often not from Kmart directly. Users complain that they have to untick a box every time they search to exclude these items. This constant adjustment can be a hassle, making browsing feel more tedious than enjoyable. As one user pointed out, “There are too many tabs and scrolling. I used to love online shopping, but not anymore.”

What’s Inside Kmart Marketplace?
Kmart has introduced a section called Marketplace, where “curated” sellers can offer products that aren’t available in stores. This aims to broaden what customers can purchase online. According to consumer expert Gary Mortimer from QUT, this is part of a strategy called the “endless aisle.” It allows retailers to showcase thousands of items while only stocking a limited selection in physical stores.
“The philosophy is simple: a retailer can show 60,000 items online, while only 20,000 are in-store,” Mortimer explained. However, not everyone is a fan of this addition. Items purchased from Marketplace must be returned directly to the seller, rather than to Kmart stores, which some shoppers find inconvenient.
Additionally, online shopping lacks the tactile experience of traditional retail. “You can’t touch, see, or try items like clothing in-store,” Mortimer added. “This gap can affect customer satisfaction.”
Reactions to the New App
Kmart says the updated app features a fresh look with smarter tools. Users can now favorite categories and browse suggestions for new products. However, feedback has been mixed. Many find the interface cluttered and frustrating.
The app also allows scanning of rewards cards and keeps digital receipts for easy access later. While these features sound good in theory, they haven’t won over the disgruntled users.
For a smoother shopping experience, Kmart needs to listen to feedback and refine the app further. Until then, many loyal customers might stick to browsing the website instead.
