Potsdam, NY – The Clarkson University Volleyball team had a mixed bag of results in their home opener. They started strong, sweeping Plattsburgh State but then faced a tough loss to St. John Fisher.
In their match against Plattsburgh State, Clarkson dominated. They won the first set 25-16, taking control early with an 8-2 lead. Plattsburgh fought back a bit but couldn’t close the gap. Clarkson kept pulling ahead, ultimately finishing the set with a nice run, thanks to Marin Hangliter and Conley Burns.
The second set had some back and forth, but Clarkson stepped it up again. They turned an 8-8 tie into a commanding 17-9 lead, finishing the set handily with Emily Alexander delivering the final kill.
In the last set, Plattsburgh briefly held a lead, but Clarkson scored six consecutive points, including strong plays from Alexander and Hangliter. They kept the pressure on and finished strong.
Hangliter had an impressive 10 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Alexander wasn’t far behind with a .429 hitting percentage of her own. The Knights showcased solid teamwork with Olivia Baxter’s 17 digs and Ashley Currier’s 25 assists.
On the other side, Plattsburgh had some standout performances as well. Darby Collyear led with 12 kills, and Iris Mulvey recorded 14 digs for the defensive effort.
However, Clarkson struggled against St. John Fisher. They started strong, winning five of the first six points, but Fisher quickly took control, scoring 11 of the next 13 points. Despite some good plays, Clarkson fell behind and couldn’t catch up.
In the second set, Clarkson held a narrow lead early but soon found themselves down as Fisher scored seven straight points. The Cardinals continued to dominate, making it clear they were in charge.
Despite the setbacks, Conley Burns and Grace Hanson each contributed five kills against St. John Fisher, with Ashley Currier showcasing versatility with 10 kills and 10 assists.
In terms of statistics, St. John Fisher had a significant advantage. Kaylene Noble and Kalyna Dannenberg each recorded 14 kills, helping lead the team to a .214 hitting percentage.
As Clarkson moves forward, they’ll look to bounce back in their upcoming matches against Keuka College and Middlebury College. Overall, consistency will be key for them to improve their performance and find success in the matches to come.
