The union for health care workers at three hospitals in the Inland Empire has reached a tentative agreement with KPC Health, preventing a strike that was set for next week. This announcement came on Saturday, easing concerns at Hemet Global Medical Center, Menifee Global Medical Center, and Victor Valley Global Medical Center.
Previously, workers had authorized a five-day strike for not only these hospitals but also several others in Orange County. The deal focuses on key issues like staffing, safety, and working conditions, as noted by the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW).
Jessica Meinert, an emergency department technician at Hemet Global Medical Center, expressed optimism. “This agreement shows that when we unite, we can make meaningful changes that benefit both caregivers and patients,” she said. “We communicated the need for better workforce investment, and KPC executives listened.”
Before becoming final, this tentative agreement must be approved by the union members. SEIU-UHW represents over 1,500 workers at KPC Health, including a variety of essential roles like respiratory therapists and nursing assistants.
In light of ongoing discussions about healthcare in the U.S., this agreement reflects a broader trend. Many healthcare workers are increasingly vocal about their needs, particularly regarding safe working environments and adequate staffing.
