Kresge Invests $18.6 Million in Grants for Climate, Health, and Equity Initiatives: Transforming Communities for a Sustainable Future

The Kresge Foundation recently revealed it is giving away $18.6 million in grants to tackle climate change, health, and racial equity challenges in cities across the U.S. This funding, part of the second phase of the Climate Change, Health & Equity (CCHE) initiative, builds on a previous five-year effort of $30 million that started in 2018. The goal is to better protect communities from the harmful effects of climate change, especially in major cities like Detroit, Memphis, New Orleans, and Fresno, California.

One of the unique features of this initiative is its emphasis on cultural and creative approaches. By integrating these strategies, the Kresge Foundation wants to empower communities to find solutions that truly fit their needs. Alongside the grants, the next phase will also offer nearly $4.5 million for peer learning and technical support to help grantees succeed.

Shamar Bibbins, Kresge’s environment program director, highlighted the severe health impacts of climate change. “While climate change affects everyone, its effects are felt more acutely in communities already facing health inequities, like unsafe housing and limited access to healthcare,” Bibbins noted. “Communities that experience these challenges must lead the way in developing solutions. Collaborating with trusted health organizations can amplify local efforts and drive broader change.”

There’s mounting evidence that climate change is exacerbating health issues. A recent study reported that extreme heat can worsen respiratory diseases, which disproportionately affects marginalized communities. According to the CDC, low-income and minority populations face higher risks from climate-related health threats. This highlights the need for focused efforts like those from the Kresge Foundation to address these challenges.
