Investigators wrapped up their search for Kristin Smart’s body at the home of her killer’s mother in Arroyo Grande last Saturday, but no remains were found. The search followed soil tests that reportedly indicated the presence of human remains, as shared by Sheriff Ian Parkinson.
Sheriff’s deputies, along with soil scientists and ground radar experts, had been at the home since Wednesday. They were investigating if Paul Flores, convicted for Kristin’s murder nearly 30 years ago, hid her body on the property.
Despite extensive digging, the sheriff’s office announced, “We did not recover Kristin Smart.” They will analyze any evidence collected to further assist the investigation. “The Sheriff’s Office remains fully committed to finding Kristin and bringing her home to her family,” they added.
This case has seen renewed attention, particularly after the podcast “Your Own Backyard” launched in 2019. The show, created by Chris Lambert, reignited public interest in this cold case. Flores was arrested in 2021 following this newfound scrutiny, and after a lengthy trial, he was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
One key expert in soil decomposition, Tim Nelligan, has worked closely with retired FBI forensic scientist Brian Eckenrode. Nelligan noted, “We’re rooting around for answers. We all want to bring Denise and Stan Smart some peace after all these years.”
In previous searches, authorities used ground-penetrating radar and cadaver dogs at Paul Flores’ father’s property, but no remains were found. Paul’s father, Ruben Flores, faced charges for allegedly assisting in the disposal of Smart’s body, but he was acquitted.
The ongoing investigation underscores how difficult it can be to solve cold cases. Over the years, technology has evolved significantly. Today, forensic methods are more advanced, allowing investigators to reevaluate evidence in previously searched areas.
