Kroger and other stores across the U.S. have recalled two types of pasta salads due to potential listeria contamination, according to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The affected salads are the “Basil Pesto Bowtie Salad” and “Smoked Mozzarella Penne Salad,” made by Nate’s Fine Foods in Roseville, California. This recall follows a similar announcement about products sold at Albertsons.
The salads were distributed to a wide range of Kroger Family of Stores, including Baker’s, City Market, and Ralphs, across many states including California, Texas, and Georgia. The recall was initiated after Kroger was informed about possible listeria contamination on September 26, with additional production dates added on October 1.
Listeria infections can be serious. Symptoms include headaches, fever, muscle aches, and in severe cases, seizures. Certain groups, such as pregnant women, newborns, and the elderly, face a higher risk of severe illness. The CDC advises anyone experiencing symptoms to seek medical attention.
Customers who purchased these recalled salads should not consume them and return them for a refund.
As of 2023, listeria outbreaks are a growing concern, with several cases reported over the past year. According to the CDC, approximately 1,600 people contract listeriosis each year, with significant hospitalizations and fatalities. Experts urge consumers to be cautious with pre-packaged foods and to stay informed about recalls.
