Kutztown University Athletics: Golden Bears Face Tough Losses in West Virginia Showdown

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. and ELKINS, W.Va. – The Kutztown University men’s tennis team had a challenging Sunday, losing both matches to West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins. Both games ended with a score of 6-1.

Although they now hold a 1-2 record for the season, the Golden Bears fought hard. They had several tight matches in both doubles and singles play, showcasing their determination.

In the morning match against West Virginia Wesleyan, Joaquin Perez secured the team’s only point. He won his singles match against Timothe Plaza, finishing with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 10-7. Dang Nguyen had an intense battle at No. 1 singles but narrowly lost 3-6, 6-4, 12-10 in a super tiebreaker.

The Bobcats took the doubles point with a 2-1 lead. However, Patrick Young and Emmitt Robinson won their match 6-4 against Giovani Pinhati and Ayumu Seto.

The afternoon match at Davis & Elkins was rescheduled due to rain from Saturday. The Senators swept the doubles matches, setting the tone for their victory. Perez and his partner Nikita Safonov fought hard but lost 7-6 (3) in a tiebreaker.

In a notable finish, Raphael Hoareau Lebon claimed a point for Kutztown with an 8-5 victory over Christo Wirahadipoernomo at fifth singles. Nguyen again faced a fierce challenge against Philipp Fedorczuk, with both sets going to tiebreakers; Fedorczuk won 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 10-7.

Looking ahead, Kutztown will take to the court again, facing NCAA Division I Lafayette this Tuesday at 4 p.m.
