Kutztown University has secured the Hunger-Free Campus grant for the fourth consecutive year. This grant, worth $60,000, helps tackle food insecurity among students by improving access to food, raising awareness, and enhancing facilities.
The Pennsylvania Hunger-Free Campus Initiative, backed by Governor Josh Shapiro and First Lady Lori Shapiro, started in 2022. Its goal is to unite colleges across the state to combat hunger and support basic needs for students. By 2025-26, they plan to strengthen connections among hunger advocates and provide resources for campuses to apply for more grants to fight food insecurity.
At Kutztown, the Bear Essentials Pantry offers non-perishable food items for students. Located in the McFarland Student Union, it’s managed by the Office of Student Involvement. The university collaborates with Friend Inc., a local nonprofit that operates a satellite pantry nearby, providing essential services to students in need.
Kutztown also educates students about food insecurity and benefits like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). With Friend Inc.’s help, students can get assistance filling out SNAP applications. Two key programs support students: the Student Assistance Program, which offers guidance on issues affecting academic success, and the Student Financial Emergency Support and Resource Team, which helps students facing urgent financial challenges.
To better understand student needs, Kutztown participates in surveys like the Real College Survey and the NSSE Survey.
Addressing food insecurity among college students is becoming more critical. A recent report from the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice indicates that nearly 40% of students nationwide experience food insecurity. As universities like Kutztown lead the way, their efforts highlight a growing recognition of the basic needs college students face today.
