Kyrgyzstan Leads the Way in Climate Transparency: Unveiling Its First Biennial Report

Kyrgyzstan is making strides in climate transparency by starting work on its first Biennial Transparency Report (BTR1). This report is part of the Enhanced Transparency Framework of the Paris Agreement. The Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision is leading this initiative with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The BTR1 will help Kyrgyzstan track its greenhouse gas emissions and evaluate its climate action efforts. This reporting is crucial for meeting the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. With help from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the report aims to improve data quality and align local policies with global standards.

Asel Raimkulova, the Deputy Minister, emphasized the government’s commitment, stating that this initiative would help craft informed policies that support both the economy and efforts to combat climate change.

The BTR1 will include a detailed analysis of climate actions, an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions, and an assessment of adaptation efforts and related spending. By strengthening the reporting framework, Kyrgyzstan aims to create more effective environmental policies and tackle climate challenges sustainably.

UNDP’s Resident Representative, Alexandra Solovieva, pointed out that the report is not just about fulfilling a requirement. It’s a chance for Kyrgyzstan to strengthen its climate policy, attract investment, and participate in carbon markets.

The launch of the report brought together government officials, climate experts, and international representatives to discuss its importance. Kyrgyzstan plans to draw on global best practices to create an effective system for monitoring and reporting climate data.

By improving transparency in climate reporting, Kyrgyzstan hopes to gain access to international financing and boost its presence in carbon markets. Reliable data and clear policies will help build trust with global partners and secure long-term investments in its climate initiatives.
