On May 20, 2025, Los Angeles County announced its second round of funding through the LA Food Equity Fund, allocating $10 million to support 31 nonprofit organizations aimed at enhancing food access and sustainability in the area.
This initiative, funded by the federal American Rescue Plan, has now reached over $20 million in total investment, addressing the alarming rise in food insecurity—an issue that impacted nearly 25% of households in L.A. County in 2024.
Supervisor Janice Hahn emphasized the community focus of this funding, saying, “Too many families in L.A. County struggle to access healthy food. By supporting local leaders, we’re investing in a future where no one goes hungry.”
The grants awarded range from $75,000 to over $400,000, funding diverse initiatives like food recovery, urban farming, and nutrition education. Notable recipients include the LA Regional Food Bank and Homeboy Industries. Supervisor Kathryn Barger highlighted that this funding goes beyond just feeding people—it empowers organizations to create lasting changes in their communities.
Programs funded will expand food services, enhance food pantries, and support farmers’ markets across areas like South L.A. and Long Beach. Supervisor Hilda Solis noted the initiative’s importance for families faced with the tough choice between paying rent and affording groceries.
The newly established LA County Office of Food Systems backs this effort, aiming to strengthen long-term food equity and supply chain resilience. This reflects a growing acknowledgment of food security as a critical public health issue. Research from the USDA indicates that food insecurity can lead to various health problems, emphasizing the importance of such funding.
Here’s the list of some funded organizations:
- California Aquatic Therapy Wellness Center, Inc. – $250,000
- Health Consortium of Greater San Gabriel Valley – $225,000
- Los Angeles Regional Food Bank – $250,000
