Tennessee Volleyball Dominates Winthrop
Tennessee Volleyball had an impressive weekend, defeating the Winthrop Eagles in straight sets: 25-19, 25-21, and 25-13. With this win, the Lady Vols improved their record to 4-1.
Zoe Humphrey shined in the match, reaching a career-high of 10 kills, hitting a remarkable .693. Over the weekend, she totaled 19 kills. Izzy Mogridge made waves too, recording her first collegiate 20-assist game with 23 assists.
The team’s success was a collective effort. Three players had double-digit kills, and three others contributed with four blocks each. Mackenzie Plante came close to a double-double, finishing with nine kills and seven digs. Paityn Chapman notched 11 kills, marking her third double-digit performance in four games. Hayden Kubik also maintained her strong form, achieving 10 or more kills for the second game in a row.
The first set was tightly contested. Tennessee found themselves down 0-2 early on, but they bounced back, trading points and ties with Winthrop. Humphrey and Kubik led the charge, each contributing five kills in the set.
In the second set, the Lady Vols took control with a 5-0 run to lead 16-12. Humphrey and Chelsea Sutton combined for eight kills, helping the team secure 17 kills in this set, with an impressive hitting percentage of .516.
By the third set, Tennessee’s defense was on full display. They recorded nine blocks and ten digs, limiting Winthrop to just five kills and a hitting percentage of -.059. Chapman led the offense in this set with five kills, supported by Kubik and Plante, who each added four.
Looking ahead, the Lady Vols will face Georgia Tech in the inaugural ‘Showdown at The Net’ on September 9. This match will kick off at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on the SEC Network.
