The Lagos State Government is gearing up to showcase its innovative climate solutions at the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil. This is a big step for Lagos as it aims to position itself as a leader in climate investment and innovation.
One major initiative on display will be the 80 Million Clean Cookstoves (CCS) Project. This initiative, backed by GreenPlinth Africa and other partners, aims to distribute 80 million clean cookstoves across Nigeria. This effort is designed to cut down carbon emissions by over 1.2 billion tonnes, while also generating thousands of green jobs and stimulating the economy.
Mrs. Titi Oshodi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change, stressed that Lagos is setting an example for other African regions. “This collaboration highlights our commitment to practical climate solutions,” she stated. She believes that Lagos’s role at COP30 will showcase how subnational leadership can attract global climate finance and promote clean energy access for millions.
Lagos will also host a significant roundtable event titled “From Lagos to the World – Financing Urban Climate Solutions for a Just and Inclusive Transition” on November 6. This gathering will bring together influential investors and policymakers to discuss innovative financing models for urban climate solutions.
Recent statistics point to a growing recognition of the importance of local leadership in climate action. According to a survey by the World Resources Institute, cities are responsible for over 70% of global carbon emissions, making their role crucial in tackling climate change.
Additionally, private sector innovators like Oando Clean Energy will present their clean energy projects at the conference. The incorporation of technology, such as on-chain Digital MRV technology for the cookstoves, shows Nigeria’s commitment to not just meet but measure its climate goals effectively.
By participating actively in these initiatives, Lagos is not merely catching up; it is stepping forward, showcasing Africa’s potential in global climate leadership.
