The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has taken action against properties in Lekki, Ajah, and Surulere for illegally discharging untreated sewage. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, announced this via his official X account on May 7, 2026.
This crackdown comes after the government had issued several warnings to property owners about the dangers of improper wastewater disposal. The properties affected include Pinnock Beach Estate in Lekki and Vintage Heights Estate among others.
The LSWMO accused Pinnock Beach Estate of intentionally pumping untreated sewage into a nearby canal, which not only creates unpleasant odors but also threatens public health and local wildlife. Complaints from residents prompted the decision to seal other properties due to their discharge of raw sewage into surrounding areas.
Wastewater disposal is a pressing issue in urban areas like Lagos. According to a recent report from the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, improper sewage management contributes to about 70% of the water contamination in the city. This problem not only impacts public health—especially during outbreaks of diseases like cholera—but also worsens flooding during the rainy season.
In fact, a study showed that areas with poor drainage systems experienced up to three times more severe flooding compared to better-managed neighborhoods. It’s important for residents and developers to understand that neglecting wastewater management has wider repercussions, affecting entire communities.
Lagos State government is firm in its commitment to improving environmental health. They emphasize that anyone found violating these regulations will face strict penalties. The community’s health and the safety of the environment must be prioritized.
