Lakeville Launches New Pantry to Boost Food Access for Senior Residents

LAKEVILLE — The new food pantry at the Lakeville Senior Center opened its doors on July 25. This initiative is part of a larger effort to support local seniors, as the pantry caters exclusively to residents aged 60 and above.

The pantry was made possible by a $250,000 federal grant, aimed at expanding the senior center. Director Lori Fahey highlighted that this new facility provides not just food, but also toiletries, all in a private setting. Previously, the pantry was tucked away in a small custodian closet, lacking the space and privacy seniors need.

Fahey emphasized the importance of dignity when seeking assistance. “Food insecurity can happen to anyone,” she noted. Life changes like losing a job or facing serious health issues can hit hard, and this pantry is designed to help in those tough times.

For now, the pantry operates on an appointment basis. Seniors can call 508-947-7224 to schedule a time to visit, ensuring their experience remains confidential. “We don’t want anyone to feel stigmatized,” Fahey said, highlighting the separate entrance for the pantry to maintain privacy.

The pantry’s supplies are completely donated, thanks to generous contributions from local organizations and individuals. At the opening, the Friends of the Lakeville Council on Aging and the Lakeville Lions each donated $1,000, showing strong community support.

Town Administrator Andrew Sukeforth pointed out that food insecurity is a widespread issue, often difficult to measure. “Everyone faces tough times,” he stated. This sentiment was echoed by State Senator Michael Rodrigues and State Rep. Norman Orrall, who attended the opening and stressed the vital role that senior centers play in community life.

As food insecurity becomes an increasing concern, especially among seniors, services like this pantry highlight the importance of community support. By coming together, Lakeville is taking significant steps to ensure that no senior has to navigate their struggles alone.
