The day before the Long Beach Pride Festival, officials announced its cancellation. They cited the organizer’s failure to provide essential safety information. The city stated, “For the safety of attendees and the community, we cannot issue the permit.”
While the festival draw excitement for its live music, art, and food at Marina Green Park, the annual Pride Parade will still happen on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Tonya Martin, president of Long Beach Pride, expressed her disappointment. “At a time when our community faces challenges, Long Beach should uplift us, not take away our expressions of inclusion,” she said.
City officials acknowledged they had tried to collaborate with the organizers to secure the necessary permit. In a statement, they explained that without required documentation, they couldn’t ensure public safety standards were met. This included inspections of the stage and emergency exit plans.
Mayor Rex Richardson noted that last-minute vendor dropouts may have contributed to the confusion. “Typically, we finalize plans 60 days before the event,” he remarked.
Martin emphasized the broader implications of the cancellation. She urged local leaders to support the LGBTQ+ community more actively. “Inclusion shows its true strength when leaders stand by vulnerable groups during tough times,” she stated.
Historically, Long Beach has celebrated Pride for years, marking it as an essential part of the city’s identity. This resonates with larger trends across the nation, where Pride events often serve as crucial safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community, especially in times of increased anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment. According to a 2022 survey by the Human Rights Campaign, nearly 8 in 10 LGBTQ+ individuals said they have felt unsafe in their own communities due to their identity.
The city is committed to this ongoing celebration. It will fully sponsor this year’s Pride Parade, ensuring that part of the spirit continues despite the festival’s setback. This highlights a critical point: while challenges may arise, the essence of pride and community support remains strong.
