There is an ongoing investigation into the tragic deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The couple was found at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Wednesday.

Gene’s body was discovered in a mudroom, while Betsy was found on the bathroom floor. A deceased German shepherd was also found nearby, in a closet in the bathroom.

The Santa Fe County sheriff’s office is looking into the case. They have reported that there were no clear signs of foul play. Investigators did not find evidence of a gas leak or carbon monoxide issues in the home.

Here’s what we know so far. Deputies responded to the couple’s home after a maintenance worker, who was there for repairs, became worried when nobody answered the door. Concerned, he asked local security to check on them. When security arrived and spotted the unresponsive bodies through the window, they immediately called 911.

Upon arrival, deputies found Betsy on her side in the bathroom. A space heater was close to her, which might have fallen. Near her body, authorities located an open prescription bottle and some scattered pills on the counter.
