Africa’s health systems are rapidly changing through digital technology. However, many digital health efforts don’t connect well with national goals. We need leaders who can bring together health and tech experts to promote effective technology use in healthcare. They need a grasp of data sharing, governance, and regional health initiatives.
The Kofi Annan Fellowship in Global Health Leadership is stepping in to fill this gap. It offers 25 funded fellowships for senior health professionals eager to lead digital health changes across Africa.
Successful health leaders must know how to manage shared data. This includes setting up unique patient IDs, national registries for health workers, and data gateway systems. The current cohort focuses on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Public Mental Health, targeting experienced professionals from government and public health institutions.
The Africa CDC covers all fellowship costs—travel, daily expenses, insurance, and learning materials. So far, 84 graduates from 34 countries have emerged from this program. Many have initiated significant health projects, written influential books, and one even became a government minister.

As social media trends focus on the importance of health technology in times like the COVID-19 pandemic, more healthcare professionals are advocating for tech in health sectors. The Kofi Annan Fellowship is a vital step toward this future.
