Lawrence Taylor recently spoke with Abdul Carter, the new edge rusher for the Giants, and made it clear that he won’t be unretiring his famous No. 56 jersey for Carter. They connected through a phone call arranged by Taylor’s agent.
In the conversation, Taylor emphasized that Carter needs to carve out his own identity on the field. “He has to be the player that he is,” Taylor told ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. “He can’t just try to be another Lawrence Taylor.” Taylor added that Carter might surprise everyone and become even better.
Despite declining the jersey request, Taylor expressed his support for Carter’s journey. “I hope he doesn’t feel rejected,” he said. “I’m here to back him up and make sure he doesn’t fall.”
Carter, who admired Taylor during his predraft visit, had shared a photo of Taylor in the Giants’ facility. He mentioned to Cowboys defensive end Micah Parsons that wearing No. 56 was a dream, but he’s also aware that No. 11, the number he wore in college, is retired by the Giants in honor of Phil Simms.
Interestingly, the Giants did allow their first-round pick in 2024, Malik Nabers, to wear the retired No. 1 after getting approval from Ray Flaherty’s family. As of now, Carter has not decided on his jersey number for the upcoming season.
This moment highlights a broader trend in sports: the passing of the torch. Young players often look up to legends and hope to honor them, while veterans encourage new talent to blaze their own trails. Carter’s journey is just beginning, and Taylor’s advice might guide him through the challenges ahead.
