Leadership Transition: Health Clinic Director Announces Resignation

At the Ohio Valley Health Center in Steubenville, Ann Quillen reflects on her remarkable journey. She’s stepping down as director, a role she embraced for years, helping people access crucial medical care.

The health center, which opened in 2008, has been a beacon of hope for over 30,000 patients who might not have otherwise received treatment. Last year alone, the center provided $1.7 million in free care, and that number keeps growing. It’s a lifeline for those without insurance, with many patients facing severe health risks if they didn’t have this support.

Quillen, who initially retired in 2015, found herself back in the role during the pandemic. “COVID was tough on nonprofit organizations,” she said. “We had to shut our doors for a bit, but we never stopped serving the community.”

When Quillen took on the director role in 2008, she brought her background in nursing and fundraising. She often relied on her husband, Rev. Clint Quillen, for feedback on grant proposals. “I’ve always had a strong team. Everyone here is dedicated to serving our patients,” she mentioned, acknowledging their hardworking staff and volunteers.

One of the center’s notable achievements is acquiring advanced medical equipment, such as an echocardiogram machine. This tool helps detect heart issues that often go unnoticed, especially in underserved communities. Data shows that Black men are 70% more likely to develop prostate cancer, and Black women are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer. By providing early detection and treatment options, the center plays a vital role in improving health outcomes.

Quillen’s decision to step down reflects her belief in fostering new leadership. “Sometimes, it’s time to make room for someone with fresh ideas,” she explained. Looking back, she feels blessed to have led the center. “This has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”

The center’s board is already searching for a new director, aiming to continue the important work Quillen and her team have built.
