The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently shared updated vaccine recommendations. This includes new guidelines for Covid-19 shots for babies and young children, which differ from what’s currently suggested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The AAP criticized the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The AAP pointed out that some members have a history of sharing misinformation about vaccines. Today’s CDC guidelines advise that Covid-19 vaccination for kids aged 6 months to 17 years should consider clinical decision-making with caregivers.
In contrast, the AAP’s stance is firmer. They recommend all children between 6 months and 23 months receive the Covid-19 vaccine, barring any allergies. For children aged 2 to 18 years, the AAP advises a single dose if they are at high risk, live in long-term care facilities, or have previous vaccination gaps.
Despite these recommendations, getting the vaccine might become tougher. The FDA has hinted at restricting Covid-19 vaccinations to older individuals and high-risk groups, potentially limiting access for younger children.
Additionally, the AAP released revised recommendations for RSV and flu vaccines, alongside over ten other vaccines. Dr. Susan J. Kressly, AAP President, affirmed their commitment to provide science-based guidelines aimed at protecting the health of children.
In a recent survey, nearly 70% of parents expressed concerns about vaccine misinformation affecting their decisions regarding childhood vaccinations. This shows a growing awareness among parents about the importance of credible sources.
