Leawood Restaurant Contaminator Sentenced to 10+ Years in Prison: A Cautionary Tale for Food Safety

A man from Johnson County has been sentenced to over 11 years in prison for food contamination at a restaurant in Leawood. Jace Hanson received a sentence of 11 years and 4 months after pleading guilty to serious charges, including multiple counts of criminal threats and sexual exploitation.

Hanson’s troubling behavior took place while he worked at the Hereford House in Leawood from late March to late April 2024. The investigation began after someone alerted the FBI. They reported that Hanson had posted disturbing videos online. In these videos, he was seen spitting on food, stomping on it, and even rubbing it on his body.

Hanson also admitted to contaminating food over 20 times in just three weeks. This behavior raised alarm bells when more than 130 individuals reported feeling unwell after dining at the restaurant.

The Johnson County District Attorney noted that the sentence given was the longest possible under the law for the charges. In light of this incident, Hereford House closed its Leawood location on August 3, citing financial issues linked to the recent events.

Food safety experts emphasize the importance of strict hygiene practices in restaurants. Mistakes or malice can lead to severe consequences, impacting not just individual health but also the reputation of dining establishments.
