Charles Leclerc kicked off the 2026 Formula 1 season with a bang during the first practice session. The Ferrari driver clocked the fastest time, outpacing teammate Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
This session marked the debut for many teams, including Cadillac, and came with new technical regulations that stirred excitement. Cars took to the Albert Park Circuit right at 12:30 PM local time. Notably, Nico Hulkenberg in an Audi led the pack out of the pit lane.
Early on, Oscar Piastri faced some trouble in his McLaren; a power issue put him on the sidelines temporarily. A quick yellow flag appeared until he got back on track. The first practice session wasn’t without incidents—Arvid Lindblad from Racing Bulls had to halt due to an issue after his pit exit, triggering a Virtual Safety Car.
While some teams found speed, others struggled. Aston Martin kept Fernando Alonso in the garage due to a suspected power unit problem. On the track, Verstappen initially set the fastest time but Leclerc soon took the lead with a time of 1:22.080.
Lindblad remained in the garage as others continued to post quicker times. New Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar briefly claimed the top spot before Leclerc reasserted his dominance. The pressure was palpable; Verstappen faced difficulties too, with a lock-up that cost him valuable time.
As practice progressed, Leclerc produced a stellar lap of 1:21.227. Verstappen was only 0.176 seconds behind, while Hadjar, Hamilton, and Piastri rounded out the top five.
George Russell was the first to switch to soft tires, improving his position. Lando Norris faced gearbox checks in the garage, leaving his potential run cut short. Hadjar also struggled with a lock-up but still managed to keep the pace.
As the session wrapped up, yellow flags waved due to Alex Albon halting on the circuit. Despite the excitement, Hamilton, known for his eight pole positions at this track, couldn’t quite match Leclerc’s time.
In the end, Leclerc’s final lap clocked in at 1:20.267. He secured the top spot ahead of Hamilton, with Verstappen in third. Rookie Lindblad impressed, finishing in fifth, while Piastri held down sixth place.
The practice sessions give teams a chance to review their strategies and fine-tune their setups before heading into the next round of practice. There’s still a long season ahead, and the competition is heating up.
