Lefferts Tide Mill & Preserve just received a $7,500 grant from the Preservation League of New York State. This funding will support an Engineering and Structural Analysis for the Van Wyck-Lefferts Tide Mill in Huntington, known as one of the best-preserved 18th-century tide mills in the U.S.
Claudia Fortunato, the Executive Director, shared, “This grant will help us explore ways to preserve and restore the Tide Mill and Dam, especially considering climate change and its effects on the structure.”
The Lefferts Tide Mill Dam, built in 1795, was designed to hold back water that powered the mill. Located across Puppy Cove in Huntington Harbor, it features a tide gate to allow water flow during high tides. Historically, a water wheel harnessed this tidal power.
Today, the tide gate uses stop logs to manage water levels. However, recent maintenance has revealed challenges. Water has been flowing around the logs and through the dam’s stone walls, which could threaten its stability. Additionally, during full moon high tides, the dam has been overtopping frequently.
The upcoming Engineering and Structural Analysis aims to identify repair solutions. This includes addressing issues around the tide gate and reducing water seepage. Experts from Haley & Aldrich, Inc. will handle the analysis, aiming to safeguard the dam from further issues.
Jay DiLorenzo, president of the Preservation League, remarked on the grant’s significance. “Bringing our partnership grants together highlights the remarkable preservation work starting across the state. These studies will set the foundation for future projects.”
Local History: The Lefferts Tide Mill is not just a monument; it tells a story about ingenuity and adaptation to natural forces. Historically, similar mills evolved as communities harnessed water power. Today, preserving such structures is vital for historical context and education.
Upcoming Events: The Huntington Historical Society will host fall tours of the Tide Mill on September 26, October 8, and October 24. These tours include a boat ride past scenic waterfront homes, with chances to see local wildlife. While the tour is not accessible for all, it offers a unique view into the area’s history.
