The Texas Rangers are gearing up for the season, and exciting things are happening. Young pitchers Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker will start the season in the rotation. This comes from team president Chris Young, who shared the news with the media.
Leiter and Rocker, former college teammates at Vanderbilt, have had quite a journey to reach this point. Leiter was picked second overall in the 2021 draft but faced challenges in his debut, struggling with his control and giving up too many home runs, resulting in a high ERA over 8.00 in 35 2/3 innings.
Rocker had his share of hurdles too. He was selected tenth overall and didn’t sign with the Mets due to concerns about his elbow. Rather than return to college, he played in independent leagues and entered the draft again, where the Rangers surprised many by picking him third overall. Unfortunately, he had to undergo Tommy John surgery not long after.
But now, things are looking up. Rocker successfully returned to action after surgery, impressing across different minor leagues, and even made his MLB debut late last season. Leiter has also made significant strides, showcasing improved velocity and performance in spring training, posting a 3.48 ERA in the Cactus League.
The Rangers’ decision to include both young pitchers in their Opening Day roster came partly due to injuries. Jon Gray fractured his wrist, and Cody Bradford is dealing with elbow soreness, opening opportunities for Leiter and Rocker to step in. They could solidify their positions in the rotation even when other pitchers return, especially given the injury history of starters Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle.
On another note, 22-year-old Evan Carter, who burst onto the scene during the Rangers’ World Series run last year, is headed to Triple-A. After a strong debut with a .306 batting average, he struggled last season due to injuries and has continued to face a tough spring, hitting just .154.
Veteran outfielder Kevin Pillar, 36, is joining the team as a backup with hopes to help out in the outfield and designated hitter roles. He has a solid but unspectacular track record, hitting around .255 over his lengthy career.
Overall, the Rangers are making interesting choices as they shape their roster for the new season, with a blend of young talent and experienced players. The mix of fresh energy from Leiter and Rocker, paired with the steady presence of Pillar, could make for a thrilling season ahead.
