LYNCHBURG, Va. — Leland Melvin from Lynchburg has a remarkable story. He’s not just an astronaut; he also played in the NFL, making him the only NFL draftee who has traveled to space.
Melvin attended local schools: Perrymont Elementary, Dunbar Middle, and Heritage High School. He has a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and an impressive collection of four honorary doctorates.
Now, Melvin is taking on a new adventure—writing a graphic novel. The book, named Space Chasers, features kids on an exciting mission. Melvin believes graphic novels are great for young readers, especially those who struggle with traditional reading.
“Kids can look at the pictures and follow the story, making reading more accessible,” Melvin explained. “It can spark their interest in books.”
Without giving too much away, Melvin teased that the kids in Space Chasers really rise to the occasion in a surprising way. “They save the day, and it’s incredible!” he shared with a smile.
For Melvin, this project is more than just a book. He wants every child to see their potential, regardless of their background. “Every kid deserves a chance,” he said. “They need access and the belief that they can achieve great things.”
Melvin hopes his readers find inspiration in his story and the characters. “I believe in these kids like others believed in me,” he added.
The graphic novel will be released on February 4 and will be available at bookstores everywhere. Melvin dreams that one day, a young reader will have a journey as extraordinary as his own.
