In a recent Instagram video, DiCaprio teamed up with the nonprofit Re:wild to discuss the significance of the upcoming summit, located in the Amazon rainforest. This region is vital, as it makes up about 60% of the Amazon, often called the “lungs of the earth.”
DiCaprio pointed out that the Amazon faces severe threats, particularly from animal agriculture. Over the last 40 years, about 95% of deforestation there has been connected to creating pasture and feed for livestock. This destruction leads to a cycle of droughts and illegal fires that affect not just the local area but the entire planet. He emphasized that, just in his lifetime, we’ve lost over 400 million acres of forest and 70% of wildlife populations.
Learning from Indigenous communities is crucial, according to DiCaprio. These groups have lived in harmony with nature for generations and can teach us how to protect our environment. Their sustainable practices show a path away from exploitation and toward restoration. Since 2021, the Forest Tenure Funders Group has raised $1.7 billion to support these communities. DiCaprio’s Re:wild has committed $500 million of that, with plans for more in the future.
As leaders gather in Brazil, DiCaprio is urging them to support those who best understand how to protect our planet. He believes policies and funding from various global summits can make a real difference. Brazil has taken a positive step by investing a billion dollars into the Tropical Forest’s Forever initiative.
