Leonardo DiCaprio Shares His Nerves on the First Day of ‘One Battle After Another,’ Draws Inspiration from ‘The Big Lebowski,’ and Reveals Why He’d Work with Paul Thomas Anderson on Any Project

Leonardo DiCaprio is finally working with Paul Thomas Anderson after years of anticipation. DiCaprio turned down a role in “Boogie Nights” back in 1997, and it’s been a long wait since then.

At the premiere of their new film, “One Battle After Another,” DiCaprio admitted to feeling nervous on the first day of shooting. “I always get nervous at the start,” he told Variety’s Marc Malkin. “But by lunch, I usually find my rhythm.”

In this film, DiCaprio takes on a gritty role, portraying Bob Ferguson, a washed-up ex-revolutionary who must team up with old friends to save his daughter. “He’s a guy who stays at home and smokes pot all the time,” DiCaprio shared, mentioning that he drew inspiration from Jeff Bridges’ iconic character in “The Big Lebowski.”

The film features action-packed stunts, which DiCaprio described as “a series of failures.” He found that portraying a laid-back character made the action easier to manage. “We did a lot of crazy stuff in this movie,” he said. “That’s what makes Paul’s direction so unique—he wants to show the fall.”

Unsurprisingly, DiCaprio embraced the role fully. He jokingly noted that he would try to “go Method” by smoking up, but added, “I can’t do that and perform.”

DiCaprio lauded Anderson’s vision for the film, calling him a “unique filmmaker.” He felt fortunate to be a part of a project that’s been in development for over 20 years. “Anytime you get the chance to work with someone like Paul, you have to jump at it,” he explained. “I would’ve done any movie he suggested.”

The film hits theaters on September 26, and it’s generating buzz on social media. Many fans are excited to see DiCaprio take on such a different character.

In terms of audience reception, surveys indicate that fans are eager for new roles from DiCaprio. A recent poll showed that 65% of moviegoers are looking forward to seeing him in more diverse, complex characters, highlighting a trend for actors to explore less conventional roles.

As cinema evolves, stories like “One Battle After Another” pave the way for a deeper connection between actors and their characters. This film might just be another step in that exciting direction.
