In a recent episode of the “New Heights” podcast, Leonardo DiCaprio shared a surprising twist from his early career. As a teenager, he was told by an agent that his name, “Leonardo DiCaprio,” was too ethnic. The suggestion? Change it to “Lenny Williams.”
DiCaprio recalled, “I was only about 12 or 13, and I thought, ‘What’s Lenny Williams?’ They said they took my middle name and made it simpler. I was just confused.”
When he first showed his father the headshot with the new name, his dad wasn’t having it. “He ripped it up and said, ‘Over my dead body,’” DiCaprio remembered.
Interestingly, actor Benicio Del Toro had a similar experience. He revealed, “I was told the same thing. ‘You’re Benny Del.’” Both actors faced pressure to conform to an industry that often favors names that sound more mainstream.
Now, both DiCaprio and Del Toro star in the upcoming film “One Battle After Another,” set for release on September 26. In this thriller, DiCaprio plays a burnt-out revolutionary who must rally his old comrades to save his daughter.
Expert voices in the film industry, like Variety’s Owen Gleiberman, praise the movie, stating, “It taps into the fierce urgency of now; it’s a thrilling wake-up call.” His review also highlights the film’s commentary on today’s societal issues, suggesting it acts as a mirror to our current state.
This discussion around name changes hints at a larger issue in Hollywood: the struggle for representation and authenticity. Many actors feel pressured to alter their identities for broader acceptance. Yet, with the rise of diverse storytelling, changing attitudes seem to be emerging.
As we see more filmmakers embracing unique voices, it raises the question: Will future generations of artists feel free to be themselves, or will they still face pressure to conform? Only time will tell.
