Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, One Battle After Another, hit theaters this weekend and grossed $22.4 million from 3,634 North American theaters. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a former revolutionary on the run, the film earned an additional $26.1 million internationally, bringing its total to $48.5 million.

Box office analysts have mixed feelings about this debut. At a cost of over $130 million for production and another $70 million for marketing, the film needs to rake in about $300 million globally just to break even. Typically, ticket sales are split 50-50 between studios and theaters.

What makes this situation trickier is that One Battle After Another is original content and nearly three hours long, lacking the built-in fan base of established franchises like Jurassic World. As David A. Gross, a box office consultant, points out, success may depend on word-of-mouth and how well it performs internationally in the coming weeks. He notes, “This movie could turn a profit if it stays in theaters long enough.”

Early feedback indicates the film is well-received, scoring an “A” on CinemaScore and a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. These ratings could boost its staying power. Premium formats like IMAX and Dolby have been important, contributing to about 51% of the domestic box office.

The film features DiCaprio as Bob Ferguson, a washed-up revolutionary living off the grid with his daughter, Willa. Initial audience statistics show that 65% of ticket buyers were male, and 42% were over 25.

In other new releases, Universal’s kid-friendly Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie opened in second place with $13.5 million, benefiting from its strong “A+” CinemaScore. Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s horror film The Strangers: Chapter 2 underperformed, earning just $5.9 million and receiving poor reviews.

Interestingly, the box office landscape is shifting rapidly. Recent data shows that original films have gained traction, partly due to the pandemic pushing audiences back to theaters. According to a recent survey, around 65% of moviegoers prefer fresh content, compared to just 35% looking for sequels or adaptations. This trend underscores the importance of films like One Battle After Another finding their audience over time.

In contrast, Sony’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle continues to perform strongly, bringing in $118.1 million domestically and over $605 million globally, marking it as the biggest anime release in North America.

As the film industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how One Battle After Another navigates its journey and whether it can build enough momentum to succeed.
