During the fall semester of 2024, I had the pleasure of speaking to a Freshman Interest Group (FIG) at Florida State University. This peer-mentoring group helps new students adjust to college life. With 35 years of experience teaching, I had some insights to share that I hope students will find helpful.
First, it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious during your college journey. That nervousness shows you care about your education. If you stumble on an exam, don’t see it as a failure. Instead, analyze what went wrong and seek help—tutors are there for you.
Building connections is vital. Get to know the students around you. Learning names and stories can enhance your experience. Remember, much of your growth happens outside the classroom. If you’re in your own world with headphones on, you’ll miss out on potential connections.
If you can, always opt for in-person classes. Interaction in a physical classroom fosters relationships and enriches learning. Treat these spaces with respect—they’re designed for growth and knowledge.
Attendance is crucial. I’ve noticed that students who struggle often miss classes. Also, consider sitting at the front; it keeps you engaged and more involved in discussions.
Take the time to meet your professors. They often appreciate a friendly hello, whether in class or on campus. Don’t shy away from office hours; instructors want to help you succeed.
A demanding course can mean your professor cares deeply about the subject and your learning. Bringing humor to your classes can lighten the atmosphere; it benefits everyone involved.
Enjoy the beauty of campus life. Make an effort to find a peaceful spot outdoors where you can relax and recharge. Remember, college is meant to challenge you, so look for opportunities that push you out of your comfort zone.
Mental health should always be a priority. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out for support. FSU has resources to help you navigate these challenges.
Lastly, be open to diverse perspectives. Hang out with people from different backgrounds; this exposure enriches your college experience. And yes, always keep up with your reading!
As you prepare for your time at college, understand that it’s not just about academics; it’s about growth, connections, and challenges. Embrace it!
