Liberty Moves On: Sandy Brondello Parts Ways After WNBA Championship Victory

Just one season after claiming the WNBA championship, the New York Liberty have decided to part ways with head coach Sandy Brondello. The announcement came on Tuesday during the team’s exit meetings, with Brondello learning about her dismissal that morning.

Brondello made history as the winningest coach in Liberty’s history and the first to lead them to a WNBA title. Under her guidance, the team reached the WNBA Finals in both 2023 and 2024, securing the championship in a dramatic five-game series against the Minnesota Lynx.

After their championship win, Brondello signed a one-year contract extension, which included a team option for 2026. However, the 2025 playoffs were less successful. The Liberty were eliminated in the first round by the Phoenix Mercury on September 19, marking a disappointing end to the season.

Injuries played a significant role in the team’s struggles. After a promising 9-0 start, their record fell to 18-17. The Liberty struggled with 18 different starting lineups and saw key players Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart miss significant game time.

Brondello, reflecting on the challenges, acknowledged that while injuries were tough, the team needed to put forth a stronger effort. “There are no excuses about what kind of effort we put into it,” she said.

Following their playoff exit, Stewart publicly supported Brondello. “She has our back, and we have hers,” she said, praising Brondello’s positive attitude despite the challenges faced during the season.

Brondello’s connection with the players and staff was a highlight of her tenure. In her first season, the Liberty won 16 games, but during her time, they improved to 32 wins in the following seasons and achieved 27 this year.

As the Liberty make changes, they’re not alone. The Seattle Storm also announced they won’t renew coach Noelle Quinn’s contract, and the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo are seeking head coaches for their inaugural seasons.

Sandy Brondello’s impact on the Liberty will be remembered. Her ability to elevate the franchise to new heights demonstrates her significance in the team’s history.
