Liberty University’s Long Run Breaks 800m Record with Impressive 1:48.22!

Exciting Performances at the Bryan Clay Invitational

In Azusa, California, Michael Long made waves at the Bryan Clay Invitational by posting a record time of 1:48.22 in the 800 meters. This impressive finish not only secured him a runner-up spot in his heat but also broke the previous Liberty record of 1:48.26 set by Brendan Pitcher in May 2024. Long has now achieved both indoor and outdoor 800-meter records in his first year with Liberty.

In addition to Long’s achievement, Allie Zealand also shone brightly in her outdoor debut. She clocked in at 2:04.17 for the 800 meters, just shy of the school record held by Kate Goodyear. This fast time places her second in Liberty’s history for that event, and it could very well qualify her for the NCAA Division I East First Rounds next month.

The day was filled with other notable performances. In the men’s 5K, Edwin Kiprop recorded a season-best time of 14:12.30. Tristian Merchant and Jack Cottrell also competed, with Merchant returning to the outdoor 5K since the 2023 NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round.

For the women, Ava Gordon impressed everyone with a personal best of 16:18.99 in the 5K, which placed her second overall among 109 competitors. Not to be overshadowed, Ryann Aycock also made history, breaking into Liberty’s all-time top 10 with a personal best of 16:47.89.

These performances reflect the growing trend in college athletics where elite training and nutrition have made athletes faster and more competitive than ever. According to a recent survey by the NCAA, student-athletes continue to break records at an increasing rate, showcasing the impact of advanced coaching techniques and improved training facilities.

Looking ahead, Liberty’s team will split up to participate in three separate meets tomorrow, including the WildCat Invitational, the Virginia Challenge, and the Bryan Clay Invitational, hoping to build on this momentum. The growing excitement around college track and field mirrors a broader interest in athletics, with fans engaging more through social media and discussing these achievements online.

With athletes like Long and Zealand leading the way, Liberty’s track and field program is clearly on the rise. Keep an eye on these athletes as they continue to push boundaries and achieve new heights. For more on collegiate athletics, explore the NCAA website here.
