Liev Schreiber Shares Heartfelt Moment When Daughter Kai, 16, Asked for She/Her Pronouns: “It Didn’t Feel Like a Big Deal”

Liev Schreiber is expressing pride in his daughter, Kai, who is confidently embracing her identity.

In a recent interview with Variety, Schreiber, 57, discussed Kai’s journey. He shared a significant moment: when she asked him and her mother, Naomi Watts, to use different pronouns. “It felt natural because Kai had always shown her feminine side,” he said.

Kai, now 16, is making waves in the fashion world, having debuted on the runway for Valentino at Paris Fashion Week just a few months ago.

Schreiber proudly celebrated Kai’s accomplishments, pushing back against critics who suggested her success comes from nepotism. He emphasized how Kai is taking charge of her identity. “She’s a fighter,” he stated. “It’s crucial for her to say, ‘I am trans’ and stand tall.” Schreiber’s support plays a vital role in a landscape where trans youth often face challenges.

When asked about advice for parents of transgender kids, he chose his words carefully. “Each journey is unique. My perspective may not apply to everyone,” he said. He added, “Teenagers can be a handful regardless of gender identity. But with support, you will get through it.” Schreiber highlighted the importance of patience and understanding during this time.

Schreiber also expressed hope despite the numerous challenges facing the trans community today. “I prefer not to dwell on the negativity,” he noted, acknowledging the overwhelming pressures many young people feel. However, he stressed that visibility and support for trans youth are crucial, especially for those lacking resources.

During the recent A Place at the Table Gala, Schreiber underscored the desperate need for assistance within the LGBTQIA+ community. “This is about more than visibility. Many face rejection and harsh realities. We have to remember the lives we are trying to uplift while we host these glamorous events,” he said.

Statistics show that trans youth face disproportionately high rates of homelessness and mental health challenges. According to a 2021 study from the Williams Institute, nearly 30% of transgender youth experience homelessness at some point before the age of 18. Lack of resources and support can make survival even tougher for these young individuals.

Ultimately, Schreiber’s message is one of love, support, and resilience. Families must prioritize acceptance and resources for their transgender children, ensuring they know they are not alone.
