Limerick Shines: Among the Top 3 Cities for Innovative Active Travel Initiatives!

Limerick City and County Council has made impressive strides in active travel infrastructure. In 2024, it ranked among the top three local authorities in the country for delivering these projects, according to the Climate Action KPI report from the Local Government Management Agency.

The Council’s Active Travel team completed 76 projects this year, a big jump from just 22 in 2023. In total, they built 17.2 km of active travel infrastructure, up from 15.6 km the previous year. This included safer routes for schools, zebra crossings, cycle paths, and improvements to footpaths and public spaces.

Mayor John Moran praised this success as a step toward a more sustainable future. He noted, “Tripling the number of projects shows we are committed to making active travel safe and appealing.”

Cllr Catherine Slattery pointed out several key projects, like new cycle paths along Father Russell Road and Childers Road. Safe routes were established for schools such as Crescent College Comprehensive and Donoughmore National School.

This rapid expansion aligns with a growing trend worldwide. According to a recent study, cities that invest in active travel see a 20% increase in walking and cycling rates. This not only promotes healthier lifestyles, but also reduces traffic congestion and air pollution.
