LINCOLN, Neb. – The Lincoln Board of Education has appointed John Skretta as the interim superintendent of Lincoln Public Schools. The board made this decision unanimously during their regular meeting on Tuesday.
Skretta expressed his gratitude, saying, “I appreciate this opportunity and the support from the board. We have a fantastic team at LPS, and this interim period allows us to create some consistency as we move forward.” He believes this role will empower future leadership rather than limit their options.
Currently, Skretta is the associate superintendent for Civic Engagement, a position he started in July 2024. In his new role, he will oversee LPS until June 2026. This timeframe gives the board the chance to conduct a thorough search for a permanent superintendent.
Before his return to LPS, Skretta was the Chief Administrator for Educational Service Unit 6 from 2019 to 2024, where he managed operations for 16 public school districts in the region.
Skretta has deep roots in education. He began his career at LPS in 1995 as an English and reading teacher. He has held various positions, including instructional coordinator and principal, before moving on to administrative roles in other districts.
His educational background is impressive. Skretta earned several degrees from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, including a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Master of Arts in English, a Master of Education in Administration, and a Doctorate in Educational Administration.
