Linda McMahon is facing a challenging situation as she seeks approval from the Senate to head the Education Department. President Donald Trump has nominated her, but he has plans that could spell the end for the agency she might lead.
Trump has expressed his desire to dismantle the Education Department, claiming it is filled with “radicals, zealots, and Marxists.” His administration is pushing for the secretary of education to minimize the department’s operations wherever possible, while seeking Congress’s help to abolish it entirely.
At a recent press conference, Trump mentioned that he wants McMahon “to put herself out of a job.” Just a day before, the department let go of at least 39 employees on probation, including crucial roles in civil rights and student aid. Officials for the department have not confirmed the exact number of firings, but they emphasize their decision was for the public interest.
While Trump hasn’t officially ordered the department’s shutdown yet, it is expected to be a hot topic during her Senate hearing. Democrats are prepared to question her commitment to carrying out the president’s controversial plans, which many believe could harm public education.
McMahon’s track record in education is not as extensive as previous secretaries. She served for a year on Connecticut’s Board of Education and has been a trustee at Sacred Heart University. She promotes school choice and has supported programs for apprenticeships as alternatives to traditional college pathways.
Before entering politics, McMahon was the CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment and became close to Trump during his political career, backing him financially and serving in his administration as the head of the Small Business Administration.
Opposition against her nomination has come from the National Education Association and other advocacy groups, which fear her plans might weaken protections for students. In contrast, some Republicans praise her business experience, suggesting she could reform education in America.
The upcoming hearing will reveal whether McMahon can align her approach with Trump’s vision without alienating the essential functions of the Education Department.
